Living on the Web with Chrome OS

The Os Chrome is an operating system (OS) created by Google that has as its main feature is based on the network. This means that the only software you need is a web browser.

The manufacturer takes the premise that all activities are conducted daily on the Internet, our computer thus becomes a "dumb terminal" where we type only website addresses and execute our tasks.

At the moment there is a " pilot program "(for residents) to test the OS on which Google provides a Notebook Cr-48 (ugly name!) it takes to boot a brief 10 seconds. So what we see on screen is a minimalist web browser: Chrome.

How is Chrome OS?

As we begin our session on the computer with the user of Gmail, we access our mail, contacts, calendar and chat. The browser sync and keep our state in case the notebook fails, explode, was stolen or simply loguearamos us on another machine with Chrome OS and keep all the state it was: open tabs in the same order, the documents "auto -saved "with the last words typed and chat with someone asking" are you there? ".

To edit documents online have the Google Docs, where you can write text, complete spreadsheets, to "Powerpoint presentations." Also through the Chrome Market we have access to hundreds of free and paid applications that offer solutions to all the needs we have: productivity, lifestyle, communication and most importantly, games.

Some pros

TooDo TooDo updates alone, that is operating system-which is basically being a webbrowser, is periodically updated from the Internet to keep us safe and the latest innovations of the network to date.
The system is super lightweight and running quickly, we think that technically all the processor and computer memory is dedicated exclusively to sail, "comfortable" on the internet. And that's plenty of processing power and speed in 2011.

Some points against

Have all our files, photos, videos and uploaded to the network identity is a bit scary if someone managed to figure out our personal access code.

So ...

All this could not have existed a few years ago, it required fast computers with large memory, internet, a society that increasingly turns to the network to share knowledge, the development of HTML5, Web 2.0, the appearance of Cloud computing, mobile telephony, cheaper costs and all that to put our lives-compressed-on multiple servers in the world.

The Chrome OS is a good approach to a new operating system, to shake the saga Windows from Microsoft that was dominating the home market for over 20 years and, at least, concerned about the rise of OS X from Apple. It has good advantages especially for its speed and simplicity of use and the great integration of the powerful and multipurpose "world of Google."

but .... and if you lose your connection? That is, if you lose access to the network lose access to your operating system and therefore you run out to use the computer, right?
Or not be as dramatic: the speed of the team depends on the quality of your connection?
    Uhm ... :)

White, thanks for writing and very good questions!
I forgot to count on the post that I Chrome is a "closed package", ie one get a machine with the OS and the notebook comes with WiFi and 3G to be connected all the time (for 3G there are different payment plans .)
And if we are in the middle of the desert with no signal, or for some reason the network fails, and we are writing a document or playing a game or writing an email we can continue our work offline as the new HTML5 standard allows what is called "local storage "is storage in the computer" client "(the user) and once again have internet web application automatically be synchronized.
Become very important connections to the network and as you say yourself at some point the quality of work depends on that speed. However, most web applications are lightweight (ie a few Kilobytes or Megabytes) and usually has a download "important" first time we entered the site and then the browser uses its cache memory system ( buffer) to not require constantly repeated files.
I hope I have clarified your doubts, and any other questions or comments write me!
PS: I leave you a funny video that explains (in English) system integrated wifi +3 g SO http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_U3eze9sDA

I think Google is pifiando this time. And that says "Google is never wrong" say "Google Wave"!

This is the era of powerful super terminal with plenty of power and lots of storage, and dedicated devices. HTML5, a technology still in its infancy, the best can not achieve even a 5% of what a current desktop PC (2011) can do.

Finally, one thing to have your mail in the cloud or your photos. Quite another to ALL of your information. Is an unacceptable risk, and in many cases, simply not possible.

This perhaps would have had more sense for mobile devices ... but there android ... just seems to me illogical. Although from a technical standpoint, it is interesting.

Diego, what you say is good addition to the Google Wave the pifiaron with Buzz, Google Video and a couple of projects that did not walk.
The HTML5 are having a handle at the moment and all modern browsers already support (up IE9) although it is true that still is not finished being written and just plan to close by 2012.
Today's computers have processing power, memory and disk size huge and probably exaggerated to think about just running a web browser. Personally I think there are many things that STILL can not do from a webbrowser, but if I see that everything points to short / medium term to start doing.
For example there are IDEs PHP development web, you can play DOOM by HTML5 and Flash Facebook grangita are editing documents "Word, Excel and PPT" as mentioned in the post, sites with 360 views degrees of sites with plugins, no FTP clients, photo editing online, in short many of the usual applications. Compared with the desktop applications it might be unfair, because, as you say, the web apps + + css3 html5 still in diapers.
The concept of "open your notebook" just running a web browser and that the famous windows ("Windows") are replaced by tabs ("Tabs") seems revolutionary. Maybe in previous Microsoft launched Windows 3.11 is preparing the "Tabs 2012" : P

It seems pretty shady to have all your information in the hands of a giant corporation like Google who knows what to do with that info in the future.

Leaving aside the "I'm giving all my info to people whose intentions do not know," the idea is quite good and you can boot in 10 seconds sounds re cornered : D .

Furthermore, the network even with HTML5, jQuery and other technologies is still much slower compared to a local document editing and do not think that will change in the coming years (maybe more in the future if) for its initial concept : HTML is basically a view, a document read-only. Javascript, CSS and other technologies are "patches" to add interactivity but we are still missing for the web is so easy to program and use as a desktop application.

Greetings! And thanks for stopping by the blog :)

The OS, but simplistic, not to say that oprovios, I really do not like.
The intention is good, the system is innovative, is a big bet on new technologies but will be advanced a little, for example what you say is true that only uses one micron from the OS compared to others, but this PC I can play Battlefield 3? is that HTML 5 has the ability 3D game DOOM very old but does not compete with the graphics engine Frosbite 2. I really hope to improve and then see as progress from now on = D
